How the coffee giant continued to evolve over the year 2012

In the 12th month of 2012, our true love (Starbucks) gave to us:

12,000-plus new locations in America alone;
11 flavors of Frappuccinos;
£10 million paid to make up for teeny tax rates in British;
9 ingredients in the world’s most expensive Starbucks drink;
8 insane locations around the world;
$7 cups of Geisha coffee;
6 new food items on the Starbucks Evenings menu;
500-plus new stores across the globe;
$4(50) gift cards made of steel for the 1 percent;
3 major changes to its Rewards program;
2 new energy drinks; and
a new flavor of Starbucks ice cream!

Despite how obnoxiously clever we think we are, in all seriousness, Starbucks continues to change the game. 2012 brought not just new ventures into new markets — worldwide expansion into India, Europe, and other regions — but also new juice and tea acquisitions and even took the company into the civil rights discussion. Every week, Starbucks made news: buying the La Boulange bakery, opening its first Juice Bar, and rolling out a brand-new mobile payment plan.

That doesn’t mean 2012 was without some faults for Starbucks. Raised prices and hidden fees pissed off plenty of people, as well as changes to the Rewards program this fall. But arguably the biggest PR conundrum the company found itself in? The red insect dye used in its Strawberry Frappuccinos. Not exactly what Starbucks lovers want to think about in their drinks. So despite the fact that cochineal is a natural, FDA-approved colorant, Starbucks officially replaced the bug dye back in March.

For the Starbucks fans, we take a trip down memory lane with our green mermaid-labeled cups in hand. From the first claim of support for marriage equality in January to the $7 cup of coffee everyone loves to mock, it’s been quite a year for Starbucks.

Starbucks Now Makes Instant Coffee In 3 Different Roast Flavors

There's no shame in hitting up the Starbucks drive-thru every morning, but for the days you're running late, your favorite coffee chain has products you can buy at the grocery store to be your own barista at home. The most recent addition to the Starbucks line-up is a collection of instant coffees that come in three different flavors.

Instant coffee may not be your typical go-to when you're picking up your groceries for the week but it's a quick and easy option for those who aren't familiar with making their own coffee or have yet to commit to a high-tech coffee machine. I should also remind you that instant coffee is one of the key ingredients to the uber-viral Dalgona whipped coffee that broke the internet last year, so you can use this Starbucks product to recreate that drink too.

New Starbucks Premium Instant is made with the same high-quality beans used at Starbucks cafes and comes in three familiar flavors. You can choose between Medium Roast, Dark Roast, and Blonde Roast  depending on your preference. The Blonde Roast is crispy and sweet, Medium has notes of milk chocolate and nuts, and Dark offers subtle notes of dark chocolate.

Each flavor will be sold at grocery stores wherever you find your at-home Starbucks products and online. The 3.17-ounce canisters of coffee go for $9.99 and will be ready in minutes so you can skip the line at the drive-thru every once in a while and still achieve the same unbeatable flavor of Starbucks.

11 Starbucks Drinks from Around the World

Though the chain started with a single store in Seattle, Washington, these days, Starbucks is something of a coffee hegemon, with more 24,000 Starbucks stores in more than 70 countries from New Zealand to Azerbaijan. But Starbucks&apos extensive global presence doesn&apost mean that every store looks the same or even offers up the same menu. There are dozens of different Starbucks drinks around the world, each tailored to reflect the region&aposs tastes and preferences. So sure, you might be able to recreate a facsimile of these special drinks Starbucks serves abroad when you&aposre back home, but more often than not, these unusual Starbucks drinks flavors are unique to the international locations.

Starbucks is also big on matching its menu to the season. If you go to the same Starbucks in a far-flung, foreign location at different times of the year, you might find different options, so not all of these drinks are available right now. If nothing else, the constantly changing menu is even more of a reason to get out there and go on your own trip around the globe, so you can cross as many of these unique Starbucks drinks off your bucket list as you can. (It&aposd be like Pokémon Go&aposs regional exclusives, but with Frappuccinos and cold brew instead of Mr. Mime and Tauros—gotta drink &aposem all!)

No matter what your end game is, here are eleven Starbucks drinks from around the world that&aposll make you want to grab your passport.

These Refreshing Starbucks Drinks Will Keep You Cool All Summer Long

When the sun comes out in the summertime, I find myself constantly needing some kind of hydration. Your water bottle can get the job done, but what about those times when you need a something a little more flavorful than plain ol' water? That's when you turn to Starbucks to discover all of the chain's crave-worthy summertime sips. Here are 10 refreshing Starbucks drinks to enjoy as the perfect complement to any summer day.

You already know Starbucks is the place to go for your morning pick-me-up, but it's also the ideal spot to get all the ice-cold refreshment you need this summer. Similar to the way Starbucks has you covered with all of its seasonal winter drinks, the coffee chain also has a lock on the tastiest sips to help you enjoy the sun-soaked days of summer. With fruity flavors and icy frappuccinos, there's no shortage of Starbucks drink options this season.

You'll probably have a hard time choosing your favorite from among all of the worthy summer sips, so it's good that all of these drinks are available throughout the year. You can try all of them this summer, and then you can keep sipping your favorites once fall hits.

The Violet Drink combines a gorgeous purple hue with the sweet flavors of summer to give you a drink that will keep you refreshed all season long. This delicious drink — made with Very Berry Hibiscus Starbucks Refreshers and creamy, cool coconut milk mixed over ice — is the cold sip you'll need when the sun is shining all day long.

OK, sangria and summertime is basically my one true pairing. There's no booze in this drink, but its fruity flavor is everything you'll need to relax this summer.

The drink packs a real flavor punch by combining Teavana Iced Passion Tango Tea with apple juice and a berry medley flavor over ice. To drive home the sangria inspiration, the Teavana Sparkling Berry Sangria Herbal Tea is topped with juicy blackberries and orange slices.

This sangria-inspired sip sounds so good that it might just make you skip your next happy hour in favor of a quick trip to Starbucks.

When the heat won't let up during the dog days of summer, nothing quenches your thirst quite like a frozen drink. There's also plenty of chocolate flavor in the Triple Mocha Frappuccino to take care of any sweet-tooth cravings.

This new layered sip features Sweet Cold Brew Whipped Cream, Mocha Frappuccino, and dark mocha sauce. It originally debuted just in time for your summer enjoyment, but you can get this sweet sip all year round, since it has joined the permanent Frappuccino menu.

Copycat Starbucks Cranberry Bliss Bars

Copycat Starbucks Cranberry Bliss Bars is the copy of the original Cranberry Bliss Bar with chunks of white chocolate and dried cranberries throughout blondie base, then topped with cream cheese frosting, a drizzle of white chocolate.

As I re-write this recipe, this time with Starbucks having discontinued selling the original Cranberry Bliss bars, I am twice as happy to share this recipe. A true holiday favorite, these white chocolate cranberry bars are one of the most delicious treats the famous coffee company used to carry. Each year when holidays come around and I make a batch of these wonderful Cranberry Bliss Bars I am thankful that my friend Olya who shared this recipe with me.

Being able to re-create the authentic flavor of the Cranberry Bliss Bars makes me giddy with excitement. These bars are as fun to make as they are to eat. I cut my bars into pretty small pieces, which makes them really cute in my opinion.

I am not sure why Starbucks decided to change up the recipe for the bars and replace their original cookie-like crust with a cake-like one, but I do not like the one they have right now. Or, should I say, I just like the ones they had before better.

So to replicate the base in the recipe for these bars the base is made to be a little more dense, holding well to the spread of the cream cheese frosting, cranberries and white chocolate.

The white chocolate in both the crust and the drizzle on top creates a nice balance for the tartness of the Craisins.

Even though the recipe has several steps involved, they are all pretty basic and simple to execute. See for yourself and enjoy a traditional holiday treat with a cup of hot cocoa or tea!

What Is the Best Drink at Starbucks?

The question of which is the best drink on the Starbucks menu is subjective. There's a lot to choose from, so the chances of ten people in the same Starbucks ordering the same drink is not likely.

What we can tell you is which drinks are the most popular. In America, that has to be the flavored caffè lattes. It's a combination of espresso and steamed milk with your choice of flavored syrup such as caramel, vanilla, and cinnamon. It's a perfect beginner's drink for any new coffee drinker and can be ordered hot or iced.

The $2.50 Trader Joe’s Find That Reminds Me of My Starbucks Order

I’ve never been a coffee drinker. Not for all-nighters. Not for early mornings. Not even during my post-high school stint as a summer worker at Dunkin’. But I love a chai latte, preferably iced and — until now — from Starbucks. Their version is a great balance of spice and creaminess, a measured mix of chai concentrate and your choice of milk. Soy is always my go-to.

Now, thanks to a recommendation from a college friend, I have figured out how to get my fix at home: the Spiced Chai Black Tea Concentrate from Trader Joe’s.

When I started working from home (about a year before the rest of the world), I had no reason to stop at Starbucks to kick off the day, but I still found myself craving that chai latte. I tried and repeatedly failed to recreate the magic of Starbucks’ version at home with store-bought concentrate and milk.

In theory I was saving myself the $4.25 I would’ve spent on a grande. But I muscled through lots of attempts that came out too spicy, too watery, or just plain bland. And that led to unfinished cartons and mason jars filled with milky, melted leftovers.
